Export Opportunities: Trendlines for 2022

We enter a new year and with it come new opportunities for exports in 2022. In 2021, according to data recently released by the Ministry of Economy, the Brazilian trade balance registered a surplus of US$ 4.322 billion in September. A surplus occurs when exports exceed imports, that is, the balance becomes positive.

Thus, exports reached US$ 24.284 billion in September. Imports reached US$ 19.962 billion in the month. In the daily average, compared to September 2020, exports grew 33.3% and imports increased 51.9%.

Thus, companies looking for export opportunities in 2022 are beginning to analyze the market and research in order to find out which sectors and demands will be on the rise.

Export Opportunities: What the surveys show

Recently the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), in partnership with sector entities and Euromonitor International, a consulting service that offers customized strategic intelligence, conducted 15 market opportunity studies. Of these, 13 are about opportunities for exports and two for services. The information published in Amanhã Magazine indicates which countries present the greatest export opportunities in 2022.

Among the segments where the greatest export opportunities were identified is agribusiness, since six of the 15 studies are linked to the agricultural chain. Australia, for example, was indicated as a promising market for Brazilian companies in the branch of agricultural machinery and equipment, while China is a promising market for Brazil to export melons, a favorite fruit of the Chinese.

In Germany, the growing interest in foods, besides healthy and functional drinks, opens export opportunities in protein concentrates, fruit flours, vegetables, fruit pulp and Brazilian vegetables.

The research developed by Apex-Brasil also revealed that cashew nut exports via the Arab Emirates can be a gateway to neighboring countries, and guides Brazilian exporters of the product to target Ramadan, in April 2022, a month considered sacred to the Islamic culture, when the consumption of oilseeds skyrockets.

In Turkey, there are export opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises producing beans and pulses, dried legume seeds used in food such as peas, chickpeas, lentils, broad beans, pods, and sesame seeds.

Export Opportunities: Pork

According to the projection released by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), the positive scenario for pork in the international market seen this year should remain in 2022. The expectation is that export opportunities in the sector will grow 13% in 2022, year in which Brazil should export up to 1.25 million tons of pork.

Export Opportunities: Soybeans

The consultancy Safras & Mercado in its first projection of shipments of the oilseed for next year, indicated that soy exports from Brazil should total 90 million tons in 2022, renewing a record after the historical maximum estimated at 86 million tons in 2021.

The consulting company foresees crushing of 48.5 million tons in 2022, above the 46.7 million tons projected for 2021. The expected imports for next year should reach 400 thousand tons, with a 53% decrease.

Safras also stated that in relation to the 2022 season, total soybean supply is expected to rise 5% to 147.41 million tons. At the other end, total demand is projected at 142.1 million tons, growing 4% over the previous year. Thus, ending stocks should rise 11%, from 4.77 million to 5.31 million tons.
